When you encounter a law enforcement officer and you haven’t called for one, the officer will usually be doing one of two things, investigating a violation of the law or effectuating an arrest. Here are a few things you do need to know. The first thing to know is that you do not, and likely should not, give the officer any more information than required by law – your name, address, and date of birth.
You must produce identification for an officer if demanded, which leads me to my second point – if an officer gives you an option to deny any type of information or request, you should deny that information or request.
